UK Emergency Alert Test – Sunday 7 September, 3pm
What’s happening?
The UK Government will send a test emergency alert to mobile phones at 3pm on Sunday 7 September.
Phones will emit a loud siren and vibrate for 10 seconds, even if set to silent.
Mobile phones or tablets do not have to be connected to mobile data or wifi to get the alert.
Why you need to know
The Emergency Alerts system warns of life-threatening events like extreme weather.
But the test could expose hidden and concealed phones, which may put victims of domestic abuse at risk.
How to opt out
You can turn off alerts on most phones.
Instructions on how to do this can be found here: gov.uk/alerts/opting-out
If alerts still come through, contact your device manufacturer.
According to Gov.uk website, you will NOT receive the alert if your device is:
- Turned off
- Connected to a 2G or 3G network
- Wi-Fi only
- Not compatible
